Small dogs are prone to luxating patellas -- loose knee caps. The patella normally sits snugly inside a groove on the femoral head. In small dogs especially, this groove can be too shallow to keep the knee cap in place. When this occurs, The knee cap can slide from side to side, which can cause joint instability and pain. This procedure is only recommended in worse-than-average cases.
